Book Review: The Thing About Jellyfish

The Thing About Jellyfish
By Ali Benjamin
The thing about jellyfish is about a girl named Suzanne and over the summer her best friend Franny died because she drowned in Maryland. Suzy was on a field trip to the aquarium and she found out by going to a jellyfish exhibit that there’s a tiny, mysterious jellyfish called the Irukandji and there a lot of documented deaths and and it’s unknown if their stings are the cause of other mistakenly thought causes of other deaths. And although it lives in Australia, the Irukandji has migrated to other places. Suzy let this sink in and suddenly she had an idea that Franny could have died from a jellyfish sting. So for her oral report in science, she looks for things about jellyfish. Later on, she researches jellyfish experts. Sh finds a guy named Jamie Seymour who lives in Australia. She then remembers a newspaper article that said kids who are 12 years old are legally allowed to travel by themselves. Since Suzy lives in South Grove, Massachusetts, and Jamie lives in Australia, She says to herself, I can travel by myself. She tries to book herself a plane ticket to Australia using her dad’s credit card online by putting his credit card number in. She gathers cash for hotels, buses, and other things by doing research online. Then, when she gets to the airport, she realizes her passport is expired. When she gets to the airport counter, the lady says she can’t travel on her own, although Suzy says that kids the age of 12 can travel on their own, but the lady says not international travel, so she calls her parents and they pick her up. Then, later she goes to the school dance. That is the end. I think if you like realistic fiction and a little of excitement, you will like this book. Although, Warning: This book has some really sad parts! Also, I fell asleep reading it, so you might get bored reading it.
